Managing your Telecom Portfolio - Jan 2007

The Business
Dublin Business School is one of Irelands leading independent college in, providing a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and executive programmes to over 5,000 students each year.

The Challenge:
Through various mergers and acquisitions, the college operates across a four-campus structure that required a tailored networking solution to connect its campuses on Aungier, Balfe, South William, and Dame streets. They needed one company to manage their telecoms portfolio across fixed line, data and mobile communications in order for staff and students to communicate effectively with each other and to communicate with the college intranet system.

The Solution:
MinuteBuyer were brought in as telecoms consultants. Working with the CFO and IT Manager they devised a number of solutions for the college, provided detailed costings for these solutions. The solution uses both fixed and wireless links to provide the services required.

As a result of the proposal, MinuteBuyer received the go-ahead from the CFO and IT Manager and won a three-year contract to provide a whole-of-enterprise telecoms solution for Dublin Business School to provide the school's four city centre locations with telecoms solutions for all its fixed line, mobile, and data traffic services.

The first solution was to advise DBS on sourcing a best-in-class PBX system, assisting them to select an appropriate PBX vendor for their needs.

MinuteBuyer also commenced managing their telecoms portfolio, seeking quality Tier-1 telecoms carriers for their local, national and international calls, but also looking for cost savings for DBS.

Finally MinuteBuyer arrange for connectivity between the various facilities and buildings of DBS to enable the staff to communicate via data and voice lines between buildings and to allow staff and students access the intranet. This solution was built by sourcing the best rates, fixed wire and wireless solutions from Tier-1 carriers.

The Benefits
The Dublin Business School contract is a great example of the benefits of using one telecoms supplier to deliver an enterprise-wide telecoms solution. Most organisations can benefit significantly from a bespoke telecommunications solution, but lack the time or market knowledge to do it themselves.

MinuteBuyer's primary role with DBS has been to tailor the most cost-effective solution for their voice and data transfer needs from among the many providers servicing in the Irish business market. This incorporated many elements ranging from negotiating pricing plans with telecoms providers to overseeing the installation of the network.

DBS IT manager Gary Wall said there were "obvious advantages" in having one supplier manage voice and data networking for the school.

"We need a robust, reliable and efficient voice and data network to run our business, it is paramount that we have best-of-breed solutions on campus, the independent advice and solutions we receive from MinuteBuyer allows us to meet our objectives.

"MinuteBuyer's solution will deliver us huge cost savings and having one supplier has also made the management of these services so much simpler. MinuteBuyer and DBS have worked well together in the past and we are very confident that their solution will deliver significant benefits for us looking forward."

A saving of 26% was made, at the same time allowing DBS to focus on their core business of educating students.
